Signs of termites in walls

Mud tubes, swarmers, hollow wood, and other wall-side clues that often send people looking for a termite inspection. Not a substitute for a WDO report.

Termites work in the dark. By the time a wall looks “off,” the colony may already be using mud tubes, damaged sill plates, or a swarm that drifted indoors. Extension services such as UF/IFAS treat this as a structural pest, not a kitchen nuisance.

This page lists wall-adjacent signs. It is not a wood-destroying organism (WDO) inspection and not a bid.

Signs worth a closer look

Mud tubes. Pencil-width tunnels of soil on foundation walls, piers, or along interior baseboards. Subterranean termites build these to keep a humidity path from soil to wood. A live tube feels packed. An old one can be brittle.

Swarmers indoors. Winged termites near windows, light fixtures, or spider webs after a rain or a warm spring day. A pile of discarded wings on a windowsill is a classic tell. Do not confuse them with carpenter ants — see the table below.

Hollow or papery wood. Trim that sounds empty when tapped, or paint that ridges as if something is mining behind it. Drywood damage can look like galleries with fecal pellets (frass) the texture of fine sand.

Buckling or blistering. Not unique to termites (moisture does this too), but it is a reason to look at the wood, not just recaulk.

Keep a few insects in a small vial or a clear bag. A photo of a crushed specimen on carpet is usually useless.

What is not a termite sign by itself

  • A single flying insect at a porch light in July
  • Sawdust from a recent renovation
  • Peeling paint on a poorly vented bathroom
  • Clicking in walls at night (that is more often rodents or expansion)

Moisture problems and termites often travel together. Fixing a leak does not replace an inspection if you already have tubes or swarmers.

What to do in the first 24 hours

  1. Log date, room, and what you saw in the sighting log.
  2. Do not spray a consumer killer into a tube and assume the colony is gone.
  3. Avoid tearing out finished walls before someone who inspects for WDO has looked. You can destroy evidence and still miss the colony.
  4. Price the likely job types on termite treatment cost. Liquid barriers, bait stations, and tents are different products with different ranges.

Real-estate transactions in many US states still revolve around a WDO report. If you are buying or selling, that document — not a blog checklist — is the one lenders and attorneys will look at.

Termite treatment is usually licensed work. Consumer monitoring kits exist; they do not replace a barrier, baiting system, or fumigation when an active colony is in the structure.

Questions people ask

Are flying ants the same as termite swarmers?
No. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist, and wings of equal length. Carpenter ants have elbowed antennae and a pinched waist. When in doubt, keep a specimen.
Can I confirm termites with a screwdriver?
A probe can show hollow or damaged wood, but it is not a full wood-destroying organism inspection. Structural treatment decisions belong with a licensed operator.
Do termites only hit old houses?
No. New construction can still have subterranean pressure, especially in warm, humid regions.
